How to Keep Your Radiators Working Efficiently

Radiators are essential for keeping your home warm and comfortable — but when they’re not working properly, you’ll feel the difference fast.

At Integrity Heating and Gas, we’re often called out across Ayrshire to help homeowners with cold radiators, faulty valves, and inefficient heating. In this blog, we’ll explain:

  • How to control your radiator temperature using TRVs

  • Why parts of your radiator might be cold

  • What you can do (and when to call a professional)

What Are TRVs and How Do They Work?

TRVs (Thermostatic Radiator Valves) are small valves attached to your radiators that let you control the temperature of individual rooms. They help:

  • Prevent overheating in rooms you don’t use as much

  • Lower your energy bills by heating rooms more efficiently

  • Add flexibility to your home heating system

You can set each TRV to a number or level (usually 1–5), which adjusts how much hot water flows into the radiator based on the room’s air temperature. For example:

  • 1–2 for hallways or spare rooms

  • 3–4 for living rooms and bedrooms

  • 5 for quick heating in cold spots

Important: TRVs don’t work properly if they’re covered by curtains, furniture, or dust. Keep them clear for best results.

Why Is My Radiator Cold at the Top?

If your radiator is warm at the bottom but cold at the top, it usually means air is trapped inside. This stops hot water from reaching the top of the radiator.

Fix:

Bleed the radiator using a radiator key to release the trapped air. If you’re unsure how to do this safely, give us a call — we’re happy to help.

Why Is My Radiator Cold at the Bottom?

When the bottom of the radiator is cold and the top is hot, it’s often caused by a build-up of sludge or debris inside the radiator. This blocks the flow of hot water.

Fix:

You may need a power flush or a chemical flush to clean out your system. This is something we regularly carry out for customers across Ayrshire.

Why Is My Radiator Cold All Over?

If the whole radiator is cold, the valve may be turned off, stuck, or faulty. It could also be a sign of a wider issue in your central heating system, like:

  • A broken TRV or lockshield valve

  • Low boiler pressure

  • A circulation pump problem

Fix:

Check if the valves are open and your boiler pressure is in the correct range. If everything looks normal but the radiator stays cold, give us a call.
